Bali Legong Dance
Stories rooted in History
Legong dance is one of Bali’s most refined dance forms, often performed by young girls gracefully moving in sync with the intricate rhythms of Balinese gamelan music. The dance is known for its precise, stylized movements and elaborate costumes, including shimmering golden headdresses and intricate silk sarongs. The stories told through Legong dance often revolve around Balinese folklore and mythology, making each performance a vivid storytelling experience.
The Legong dance is a traditional Balinese dance from Indonesia, specifically from the island of Bali. It is one of the most iconic and revered dance forms in Balinese culture.

Legong dance is characterized by its precise and intricate movements, often performed by young women dressed in elaborate costumes adorned with gold, silver, and precious stones. The dance tells stories from Hindu mythology, particularly those related to the Ramayana epic, which is deeply ingrained in Balinese culture.
The term "Legong" comes from the Sanskrit word "Lagung," meaning "to fight." However, it's not about physical combat; instead, the dancers' movements are highly stylized and symbolic, conveying emotions, thoughts, and stories through a combination of gestures, postures, and facial expressions.
There are several types of Legong dances, including:
- Legong Gamelan: The most well-known version, performed with traditional Balinese instruments called gamelan.
- Legong Barong: A more contemporary variation that incorporates elements of Western dance styles.
- Legong Kecak: A unique dance that features a group of male dancers who chant and sing while performing intricate hand gestures.
Legong dance is renowned for its technical complexity, artistic expression, and cultural significance. It has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2005.

Traditionally, legong dancers were girls who had not yet reached puberty. They began rigorous training at about the age of five. These dancers were regarded highly in the society and usually became wives of royal personages or wealthy merchants. They would usually stop dancing after marriage. However, in present, Indonesia dancers may be of all ages and performances by men in women's costumes are also recorded.
When watching a Legong performance, you can expect to see:
- Highly stylized movements and choreography
- Intricate footwork and hand gestures
- Elaborate costumes with gold and precious stones
- Traditional gamelan music accompaniment
- Emphasis on storytelling through dance and facial expressions
Legong dance is an integral part of Balinese culture, and its beauty and significance have captivated audiences around the world.
