Buleleng Set to Welcome Luxury Cruise Ships by 2025

Celukan Bawang Port Prepares for Increased Tourism and Global Visitors

Celukan Bawang Port is a seaport in the north of Bali, in Buleleng Regency. Historically the port handled cargo and local shipping, but over recent years it has been developed to host international-tourism cruise ships as well. The port is considered a strategic entry point to explore North Bali giving access not just to the port itself but also to nearby attractions and natural destinations away from the more crowded south (Gilitransfers,2025).

The port is now attracting major global cruise lines and bringing a surge of international visitors to Buleleng. This momentum continues through the end of 2025. Earlier in 2025, the port has already handled several cruise calls, including major vessels like MV Riviera, MS Seven Seas Mariner, MS Seven Seas Voyager and MS Insignia (Mediatrans, 2025). After the arrival of the luxury liner MV Genting Dream which brought 4,600 passengers on Wednesday, December 3 four additional cruise ships are set to dock throughout the month, marking the peak of this year’s cruise season. The schedule begins with the MV Genting Dream, followed by the Azamara Pursuit on December 17, the Celebrity Millennium on December 19 and 24, and concludes with Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas on December 31.

The arrival of these cruise ships is expected to bring big economic benefits to Buleleng. The Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, Gede Dody Sukma Oktiva Askara, said that cruise passengers count as tourists because they stay in the area for more than six hours. Their visits help local businesses tourist attractions get more visitors, and people spend money on food, drinks, souvenirs, and transportation. He also shared that by the end of November, Buleleng had already welcomed 1.5 million tourists, and he is confident the target of 1.7 million will be reached during the Christmas and New Year holidays, supported by the extra cruise ship arrivals in December.
