Charlie Chaplin in Bali

Charlie Chaplin visited Bali in 1932

Charlie Chaplin traveled extensively during his career, visiting many countries around the world, including Europe, Asia, and South America. He was known for his love of adventure and his desire to experience different cultures.

In 1932 Chaplin was experiencing a midlife crisis and decided to escape Hollywood to find inspiration and rejuvenation. Accompanied by his brother Sydney, Chaplin toured Europe and eventually made his way to Bali. He was fascinated by the serene lifestyle and the rich culture of the island.

During his stay, Chaplin was particularly captivated by the traditional Balinese dance performances. He even incorporated elements of Balinese dance into his 1936 film "Modern Times", featuring a scene with Balinese dancers. His visit to Bali had a lasting impact on his work and contributed to popularizing Balinese culture in the West.

Chaplin's time in Bali was also documented in a short film, showcasing the landscapes and people he encountered during his travels. It's a fascinating glimpse into Bali's past and Chaplin's creative journey. Charlie was amazed at Bali as a refuge from the "general unrest of the world".

Chaplin visited Bali with his brother, Sydney, who was keen to film the island's topless women. Chaplin was charmed by other aspects of the island. Fascinated to learn that the natives worked only a few months in the rice fields, devoting the rest of their time to culture, he wrote: "From these people one gleans the true meaning of life – to work and play – play being as important as work to man's existence. That is why they are happy."

The Balinese lifestyle and culture strangely resonated in him, so much so that Chaplin goes as far as dancing with the Balinese, aptly mimicking their dance moves that unexpectedly echo his own art of pantomime. Most importantly, Bali helps him resolve his fear of sound, thus enabling him to embark on a new phase of filmmaking that will lead him to "Modern Times", the first movie in which he does even better than speak, he sings! Yet, this moment of epiphany in Bali is not pure naivety on the part of Chaplin, as he is also discovers the colonial world and is able to perceive its limitations, and eventually its dark side.

The documentary below chronicles Charlie and his brother Sydney's journey to Bali, capturing their experiences through a small camera. This trip, initially intended as an escape, ultimately provided Chaplin with the inspiration to overcome his fear of talking movies, leading to the creation of masterpieces such as "Modern Times" and "The Great Dictator".
