Pagerwesi day:
A Special Celebration in Buleleng, Bali Island

Every 210 days in Bali, Hindus across the island celebrate Pagerwesi Day. What makes it unique, however, is how the people of Buleleng celebrate this holy day on a much larger and more vibrant scale. So, what exactly is Pagerwesi?
The Meaning of Pagerwesi

Pagerwesi is a sacred day in Bali that symbolizes strong spiritual protection and unwavering faith, guiding individuals away from darkness. Celebrated every 210 days according to the Balinese calendar, Pagerwesi always falls on a Wednesday.
On this special day, Balinese Hindus gather at temples and other sacred places to pray, reflect, seek blessings, and strengthen their spiritual connection.
Why Is Pagerwesi “Special” in Buleleng?
According to koranbuleleng.com (2021), Nyoman Suka Ardiyasa, an academic from Sekolah Tinggi Agama Hindu Negeri Mpu Kuturan Singaraja, explains that Pagerwesi is celebrated more elaborately in Buleleng due to ancestral teachings passed down through generations. These teachings encourage the community to celebrate Pagerwesi with sincerity as a moment of both physical and spiritual strengthening.
How Do People in Buleleng Celebrate Pagerwesi?

The celebration of Pagerwesi in Buleleng differs from other parts of Bali. While most Balinese Hindus focus on prayers at temples and sacred sites, people in Buleleng often continue their rituals by visiting cemeteries.
After the prayers, they present banten (offerings) at the graves of family members who have passed away but have not yet undergone the Ngaben (cremation) ceremony and are still buried. This is then followed by a shared meal at the cemetery with family members.
This tradition reflects a deep sense of respect and remembrance for loved ones, strengthening the bond between the living and their ancestors while preserving local customs unique to Buleleng.
However, the way Pagerwesi is celebrated varies across the region. In Singaraja, the celebration is lively and vibrant, while in western areas like Gerokgak and Busungbiu, it is more simple and modest. In eastern Buleleng, from Buleleng District to Tejakula, the celebrations become more festive again.
These differences make Pagerwesi in Buleleng unique, showing how one sacred tradition can be celebrated in diverse ways.
