Endek Mastuli :

Preserving an Artistic Treasure of North Bali

Why Endek Mastuli from North Bali is Special?

Beyond its breathtaking natural beauty, North Bali is also home to a unique form of art expressed through a traditional fabric known as Endek Mastuli. This distinctive woven textile originates from Kalianget Village in Buleleng and reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region.

What is Endek Mastuli?

Endek Mastuli is a traditional ikat(tie) weaving made from pure silk threads without any blends, resulting in a fabric that is exceptionally light, smooth, and naturally glossy compared to endek made from cotton or polyester. What makes it even more special is the way it is produced using traditional tools such as ATBM (Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin / traditional handloom), preserving the authenticity and craftsmanship passed down through generations.

What is the process of making Endek Mastuli?

The process of making Endek Mastuli is long and intricate. It begins with dyeing the threads for 15–30 minutes, followed by yarn rolling and the tying process according to the desired motifs, which can take up to half a day depending on their complexity. Endek Mastuli features a variety of beautiful motifs, including Keplok, Lasem, Dobol, and Pelangi, each reflecting unique artistic value.

The price of each piece varies depending on the complexity of the design. According to jembranaexpress (2024), as stated by Nyoman Sedana, one of the Endek Mastuli artisans, the fabric is typically priced between IDR 400,000 and IDR 500,000.

The final stage after this detailed preparation is the weaving process itself. For visitors who are curious, this traditional craft can be seen directly in Kalianget Village. Some of the weaving houses in the area include Busana Sari, located on Jalan Pratu Kata Siana and owned by Ibu Jero Ketut Pancini, as well as Losiana Tenun, owned by Ibu Ketut Resiani. Both are approximately 16-minute drive from Lovina. These are some of the Endek Mastuli production sites in Kalianget Village, along with a sneak peek of the weaving process, here.

Today, Endek Mastuli is not only used as clothing but also holds important social and cultural significance. The fabric is often given as a symbol of kinship and friendship, as well as a meaningful souvenir. It is also widely used in various Balinese ceremonies, reflecting its deep connection to local traditions and cultural values.

If you want to purchase Endek Mastuli, you can visit its production sites directly in Kalianget Village or stop by Warna Bali Store, which is open daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, as well as Krisna Oleh-Oleh Temukus, which is open every day from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Endek Mastuli represents the refined beauty of Balinese handwoven silk, crafted with precision and tradition in North Bali. With its traditional motifs and premium quality, it stands out as one of the most authentic Balinese textiles, offering both beauty and meaning in every piece.
