Who would have thought that behind the beauty of the Kintamani highlands lies the origin of one of Bali’s most iconic dog breeds? The Kintamani Dog comes from the cool, rugged, and forested mountain region of Kintamani Village in Bali.
In 2019, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) the global organization that regulates dog breeds officially recognized the Kintamani Dog as a pure breed native to Bali. Historically, this dog is believed to be a cross between Chow-Chow dogs from China brought to Bali long ago and the local Balinese village dogs. Genetically, they even share similarities with the Australian dingo.
A 2005 study by I Ketut Puja titled “The Kintamani Dog: Genetic Profile of an Emerging Breed from Bali, Indonesia” revealed that the Kintamani Dog belongs to an ancient breed group that has lost much of its genetic variety over thousands of years.

- A height of around 40–44 cm

Personality of the Kintamani Dog

Personality of the Kintamani dogs are known for being brave, alert, highly aware of their surroundings. They tend to be territorial, especially toward unfamiliar dogs entering their area. Their strong guarding instincts make them reliable watchdogs. Despite their alert nature, they are friendly with humans and form deep bonds with their owners. Once they trust someone, they are gentle, loyal, and affectionate. They are also tough and adaptable even in colder environments. Because they are active dogs, they require regular play, exercise, and stimulation to keep them happy.
Intelligence: Instinct Over Obedience

Socially, they are sensitive to human emotions and can read their owner’s mood. Their intelligence is not the “obedience-focused” type seen in breeds like Golden Retrievers instead, they excel in instinctive and environmental intelligence.
The Kintamani Dog can be a great choice if you’re looking for a pet that can also serve as a loyal guard dog. They may not be the smartest in terms of obedience, but they are trainable, devoted, and instinctively intelligent. With the right care, bonding, and environment, the Kintamani Dog makes a loving and reliable companion
