Life of Equality: Tri Hita Karana

Philosophy of Living in Harmony

A Balinese Philosophy of Living in Harmony

Bali is not only known for its stunning natural beauty but also for its rich cultural heritage. One of the most profound teachings passed down through generations in Balinese culture is the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana.

Tri Hita Karana is a way of life that emphasizes harmony in three key relationships. The term comes from the Balinese words:

  • Tri meaning “three”
  • Hita meaning “harmony” or “well-being”
  • Karana meaning “cause” or “reason”

Together, Tri Hita Karana means "the three causes of well-being"

This philosophy teaches that true happiness and prosperity come from maintaining balance in three interconnected relationships:

1. Harmony Between Humans and God.

Balinese people believe that life is a gift from God. As a form of gratitude, they nurture their spiritual connection through daily offerings, prayers, and religious ceremonies. This devotion helps them stay grounded and spiritually fulfilled.

2. Harmony Between Humans and Nature

Nature is where we live—and it sustains us. The Balinese philosophy encourages people to care for the environment, recognizing that our survival depends on a balanced relationship with the natural world. Protecting nature means preserving life itself.

3. Harmony Between Humans and Each Other

As social beings, we need one another. Tri Hita Karana emphasizes respect, compassion, and cooperation in our interactions with others. Through kindness and understanding, we create a peaceful and supportive community.

The concept of Tri Hita Karana doesn’t just live in tradition—it’s also embraced by modern institutions. One example is  Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha) in Singaraja, Buleleng, which integrates this philosophy into its values and campus culture.

In essence, human life cannot be separated from these three vital elements. By living according to Tri Hita Karana, we move toward a more balanced, meaningful, and harmonious existence.

This timeless wisdom is more than a cultural concept—it’s a reminder to live with gratitude and responsibility, nurturing every relationship that gives life its true richness.
